Stony Brook Power Packaging Team Wins Phase 1 of the $2.25M Silicon Carbide Packaging Prize

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity announced the Phase 1 winners of the prestigious $2.25 million Silicon Carbide (SiC) Packaging Prize this week, recognizing eight innovative teams from across the nation.

Among them, the Stony Brook Power Packaging Team, based at Stony Brook University, secured a $50,000 cash prize and advanced to the competition's next phase.

Led by the innovative expertise of Fang Luo, the Stony Brook Power Packaging Team earned accolades for its groundbreaking proposal to develop high-voltage, high-current, fast-switching, and cost-effective modules.

Their work not only focuses on achieving technical excellence but also includes establishing a business entity to facilitate engineering sampling and future commercialization. This dual focus on research and market readiness aligns with the competition’s vision of practical and scalable energy solutions.

What’s Next?

The competition now moves to Phase 2, where the Stony Brook Power Packaging Team, alongside the other winning teams, will spend the next year developing and demonstrating prototypes. The Phase 2 journey culminates in late 2025 with a three-month prototype testing period at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
