The Intensive English Center (IEC) is a full time program for international students looking to improve their English language proficiency.  For the Fall 2016 semester, approximately 70% of IEC students have conditional admission to the university and plan to begin their undergraduate studies either this spring or next fall.  This year’s IEC students span the globe, coming from China Colombia, Israel, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, and Venezuela.

Beyond language learning, the IEC program also serves as an introduction to American culture and Long Island.  Each semester, IEC students participate in cultural programs like field trips to New York City and eastern Long Island, as well as celebrate traditional American holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving.

This fall, students visited the Garden of Eve farm in Riverhead to take a tour and learn about organic farming.  The students had fun taking pictures with the farm animals and purchasing fresh produce.  Afterward, the group went shopping at the Tanger Outlets to buy winter gear and look for bargains.

In October, IEC students learned about Halloween and enjoyed wearing costumes for the IEC’s annual Halloween party.  Teachers and staff also dressed in costumes and explained the customs and traditions of this fun American holiday.

During International Education Week, the students worked hard to prepare presentations to share interesting facts aboutf their cultures and countries.  They created short videos, PowerPoint presentations, and interactive quizzes for the audience.
