Andrew Engelhardt

Biography

Andrew Engelhardt is an Assistant Professor of Political Science. Before joining Stony Brook, he was an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. He also held a postdoctoral research associate position at Brown University’s Taubman Center for American Politics and Policy and an affiliation with The Policy Lab. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Vanderbilt University and B.A. in Government from The College of William & Mary.

Research

Andrew uses insights from political psychology to understand how multi-racial liberal democracies like the United States navigate challenges around fostering inclusion and addressing group-based inequalities. As part of this he investigates how individuals’ attitudes about social groups– particularly racialized groups–develop and change, and when, why, and among whom they influence political opinions and decision-making. His current projects consider the nature of group-centric thinking in American politics, whether and how people want children to learn about race and racism, and how people’s pre-political philosophies about life give rise to ideological thinking.
