Reflections on Our Semester Together
December 10, 2024
Dear Stony Brook Campus Community,
As the fall semester comes to a close, I want to offer all students best wishes for success on their final exams, projects and papers. Soon the semester break will be here, and I hope it will be both enjoyable and restful for you and your families. To our students who are finishing their studies at Stony Brook this semester, on behalf of our entire campus community, we congratulate you and are certain of more success in your future.
I would also like to thank our faculty, staff and healthcare workers for your hard work and your dedication to our academic, research and healthcare missions all throughout the year. The way this campus works as a team whose members support each other reflects a campus culture I admire and am so proud to be a part of. It continues to be an honor for me to join you in advancing this wonderful chapter in our university’s history.
Clearly, something very special and unstoppable is happening at Stony Brook—from changing the delivery of healthcare in notable ways, to growing the impact of the Stony Brook Southampton campus, to our winning Seawolves athletics teams and to our extraordinary growth as a destination of choice for first-year students. In keeping up with this momentum and all the opportunity it represents, I am pleased to share that we are about to begin development of the Seawolves Village, a modern campus residential unit located adjacent to the tennis courts that will provide housing for approximately 500 students by Fall 2025. The vision and speed with which we are able to address one of our most pressing challenges is yet another example of the Stony Brook commitment as New York’s flagship to delivering on the promise of excellence our students desire and deserve.
When we return after the semester break, we have got quite a few things to do. At the top of my own list will be lobbying the State of New York for new and renovated facilities that are fitting for a flagship institution. Attention will also be given to advancing the vision of the New York Climate Exchange, completing our campus master planning, and continuing to invest in research.
Our vision is ambitious, and yes, we have a lot of work to do. But with admiration and pride, I have seen how this university meets and exceeds expectations when we all work together. I look forward to joining you in accomplishing great things in 2025.
Thank you for all you do for Stony Brook.
Sincerely,
Richard L. McCormick
Interim President
