Campus Safety Advisory: November 8, 2024
To the Campus Community:
As part of our continuing effort to keep the campus community informed about matters of safety, we are notifying you that the Division of Enterprise Risk Management and University Police Department are aware of several social media posts and associated comments referencing a sexual assault that was reported outside of a residence hall earlier this week.
The University Police Department (UPD) is investigating this incident and preliminary information indicates that there is no present danger to the campus community. Anyone with information about this or any other incidents on campus are encouraged to contact UPD by dialing 333 from any on-campus landline or 631-632-3333 from any mobile device.
As a reminder, our campus community is protected by a comprehensive, multi-layered security infrastructure that includes 24/7 police patrols, closed-circuit television cameras, electronic card access systems as well as several additional safety programs outlined below.
GENERAL SAFETY REMINDERS
Always be aware of your surroundings. When walking at night, students who feel unsafe traveling between on-campus destinations are encouraged to utilize Residential Safety Program (RSP)’s Walk Service The service is available from 12:00 pm to 3:00 am for all students, faculty, and staff. You can contact Walk Service by dialing 2-WALK (9255) from an on-campus landline or 631-632-9255 from any mobile device. Remember that it gets dark early so if walking after dusk, wear light clothing or carry a flashlight so you are more visible to drivers. Always use sidewalks and crosswalks wherever possible. Also, remember not to use your phone and remain alert when crossing roads.
Resident students, please refrain from propping doors open or allowing others to walk through a door behind you after you have scanned into the building. If you see an open exterior door to a residence hall, you should close it and notify a staff member.
At off-campus events, travel with a group or make plans to check in with others at specified times to ensure you’re safe. Be aware of off-campus addresses that you visit, who is providing transportation, and who may be hosting the event. Do not leave food or drinks unattended.
Our safety app, SB Guardian, allows for one-touch dialing to UPD and safety timers. Within SB Guardian, users can set a specified arrival time and alert your emergency contact upon safe arrival.
