Energy Performance Contract Energy Conservation

Currently the Stony Brook Campus spends over $55 million on utilities. In an effort to decrease these costs, Stony Brook University took advantage of the EnVest program which is administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). NYSERDA developed the State Energy Investment Program ("The State EnVest Program") to provide technical and financial assistance to New York State agencies interested in using energy performance contracting to become as efficient as practical through the design and installation of energy-efficiency measures. The EnVest program provides the framework for State agencies to implement energy conservation projects and fund these projects through the savings on their utility bills. Honeywell, formerly Sempra Energy Services (SES), our selected Energy Services Company, completed a comprehensive energy audit (CEA) for Stony Brook University in 2002. The completion of the CEA was based on Stony Brook's desire to make the entire campus as energy efficient as practical through the installation of energy conservation measures and implementation of efficient operations by means of an energy performance contract (EPC). The list of energy conservation measures and respective scope of work for the first phase of the EPC cost a little over $25 million and is guaranteed to reduce SBU's expenses for energy, water and operation and maintenance by $2.9 million annually. Further the scope of work improves space comfort, provided value engineering, upgraded university infrastructure, upgraded system controls and improved operational flexibility. This project was completed in May of 2006. Each year thus far we have well exceeded our guaranteed energy savings. We are also saving over 42,000,000 gallons of water and 22,000,000 kWh of electricity each year.
