Frequently Asked Questions
Awards
- The university awards merit awards based on several factors such which include a student's admission record, funding received by New York State, incoming class size and academic records. Our merit based awards are not appealable.
Students will be able to log into Scholarship Universe once matriculated into the university as a incoming new or transfer student. This happens normally after May 1st. If you are still unable to log into Scholarship Universe and are a accepted student please contact our office via email at finaid@stonybrook.edu
You will see upon logging into Scholarship Universe that any application you have submitted with a status of Awarded. You will also see aid posted to your Solar Account.
Excelsior may be affected if receiving scholarships for tuition. You can reach out to external scholarships you receive and ask for a letter stating that your scholarship can not be used towards tuition but for non tuition expenses such as fees, books, or living expenses. Please have the scholarship company submit award letters to sponsoredbilling@stonybrook.edu
Appeals/ Reinstatements
- If a scholarship appeal is approved you would receive your scholarship going forward. You would not receive the scholarship from the prior terms when you were ineligible.
- The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships reviews appeals in the order in which they are received. We ask for at least 2 weeks from date in which documents are submitted for review. Students will receive notifications via email and Solar with the response.
- If your original scholarship appeal was denied only a appeal with new documents or information will be reviewed for a second time. We recommend that the student correct their GPA/Credits before appealing a second time.
