Reconsideration
Steps a candidate can take
If their promotion/tenure review is not successful
Associate professor promotion & tenure
If your case for tenure and promotion to associate professor is denied, it means that your faculty appointment will expire at the end of your seventh year.
However, you can speak with your chair and/or mentor(s) about the possibility of reconsideration.
Your department may request a reconsideration within 2 months of receiving notice of the negative result.
You will then provide a new set of materials (including any additional publications/scholarly activity/grants, evidence of improvements in teaching or service) for consideration during the terminal year of appointment and additional external referees are to be selected to conduct a fresh evaluation of the promotional package. The letters to the new external referees requesting evaluation of the file should not signal a failed prior review. The file that is forwarded for reconsideration, however, should include all information (including the first set of letters from external referees).
As this resubmission occurs in the “terminal year of appointment” if it is not successful, you will be considered terminated at the end of the year.
Full Professor promotion
If your case for promotion to full professor is denied, you can resubmit another year.
You can speak to your chair, mentor, and others about how to improve your file and a timeline for resubmitting in another year.
