David R. Scarzella
Assistant Vice President for Healthcare Safety and Chief of Police
David has over 24 years of professional experience at Stony Brook and is a proud alumnus. He holds a Bachelor's in English and Political Science, a Master's in Human Resources and is a graduate of the Suffolk County Police Academy.
David has worked in various roles at the University including Director of Residential Risk Management, Director of Security for East Campus Operations, Inspector and Director for East Campus Operations and most recently as a Deputy Chief of Police. Within the University Police Department, David quickly distinguished himself as the law enforcement healthcare expert and has ably overseen and directed all aspects of safety and security while ensuring applicable regulatory compliance throughout the health system. David's expertise has significantly enhanced the public safety and law enforcement services throughout the hospital, including extensive expansion of electronic physical security systems, strengthened police capabilities, and overall strategic planning to support the ongoing growth of Stony Brook Medicine.
Prior to his appointments within University Police, David worked closely with key campus partners and all of the entities now under the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) umbrella. Under his leadership, David developed strategic initiatives that have elevated the safety and security throughout the campus. Notable projects include partnering on campus wide fire alarm upgrades, re-design and expansion of CCTV camera systems, and various safety campaigns focused on pedestrian and personal safety. David has received many awards and honors during his Stony Brook tenure, including a Presidential Diversity Mini Grant, developing a graduate diversity in higher education course, co-chairing a first year student accreditation team with the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education and what he considers his greatest honor, being a member of the University Police Department trusted with the safety of our entire community.
With the tremendous support of hospital leadership, David has been continuously enhancing our security posture across the healthcare network. He has reorganized the Public Safety team to better serve the needs of the hospital and is actively working with our ambulatory sites to ensure security standards across the network. This work will only continue with greater resources and be exponentially amplified as he partners closely with our AVP for Campus Safety and Chief of Police, Dawn Smallwood.
