Emily Markowitz
School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences
Emily Markowitz is an Accelerated Master’s student within the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. Studying in the lab of Dr. Janet Nye, her interests lay in the distributional shifts of fish populations. Recently, Emily accompanied the STRIDE Program Coordinator on a community outreach event, communicating her science within a local elementary school.
A native of Croton-on-Hudson, Emily grew up near the watershed and 40 acres of marsh. Emily says, “I love to be outside; hiking, exploring. I love seeing new places.”
Emily has studied abroad in New Zealand and had spent much time in Bermuda as a child.
When asked who has inspired her love for science, she said, “I don’t want to give a cliché response, but I have to say Bill Nye and Sylvia Earle. And, of course, my parents were instrumental and really supported me. I am also inspired by all the people who research helps and the long-lasting impact it makes on our communities.” Active on the Stony Brook campus, she served as President of the Marine Science Club as an undergraduate.
Emily states, “Sometimes you have to just go for it. If you don’t try, then you’ll never know. Always ask.”
Emily plans to pursue a Knauss Fellowship and a career in fisheries management.
