SBU Named to 2021 Princeton Review Guide to Green Colleges

The Princeton Review has named Stony Brook University to their 2021 “Guide to Green Colleges” in recognition of the University’s overall commitment to promoting sustainable practices on campus. The honor marks the 11th consecutive year SBU has been featured in the “Guide to Green Colleges.” The criteria to be included in the Green College list includes a healthy and sustainable campus quality of life, adequate preparation of students for “employment and citizenship in a world defined by environmental challenges” and commitment to environmental issues.
Stony Brook earned a total score of 97 out of 99 points, indicating that the University easily surpassed the qualifying score of 80 points. The Princeton Review grading system ranges from the lowest score of 60 to the highest score of 99. Much of the grading was based off answers to a 2020 survey which asked the institutions a range of questions, including if there was a body solely dedicated to sustainability on campus, if the school has a mass transit program and if the college has a formal plan to reduce greenhouse emissions.
The Princeton Review received applications from hundreds of universities and colleges in North America and only those with a green rating of 80 or above are included in the “Guide to Green Colleges” annual book. This year’s edition included 393 schools in the U.S., 22 in Canada and one in Greece.

The Princeton Review began considering the sustainability of college campuses back in 2009 and they are now partners with the U.S. Green Building Council to issue these “Green Ratings” and the annual guide.
