Scholarships

The Department of Civil Engineering has several scholarships designated specifically for civil engineering students. Some are featured below, but several, such as the SUEZ scholarship and Othmar Ammann students, need to apply via the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences scholarship page. Applications for these awards are typically due in December. Through the CEAS scholarship page, you can also find engineering-wide scholarships. A listing of scholarships available to all SBU students can be found on the Scholarship page on Stony Brook University's website.

Civil Engineering Diversity Scholarship

Established in 2021, this scholarship will provide support for undergraduate students enrolled in the civil engineering major. The scholarship was designed to attract and retain students who are committed to advancing the interests of gender equality and civil rights within the civil engineering profession.

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must:

  1. be enrolled full-time and in the civil engineering major
  2. demonstrate high academic achievement

Preference will be given to students who:

  1. demonstrate financial need
  2. have demonstrated interest in creating and promoting equal opportunities for all in the fields of science or engineering.

Civil Engineering Gateway Scholarship

The goal of the Civil Engineering Gateway Scholarship is to recruit outstanding SBU undergraduate students to pursue an MS degree in civil engineering at SBU with the additional opportunity of linking their graduate education with an industry engineering experience. The fellowship consists of a $5,000 award for use toward tuition costs during one academic year (two semesters). The fellowship will be split and awarded each academic semester. Two awards per year are estimated. The Gateway Fellowship is provided in partnership with H2M architects + engineers. The application period is January 15 to 5pm (EST) January  30. Civil Engineering Research Experience Award Fellowship

The Civil Engineering Research Experience Award provides high-achieving civil engineering undergraduate students with an early opportunity to become engaged in research with faculty in the Department of Civil Engineering during the summer periods. The award is in the form of a paid research assistantship of $5,000 over 10 weeks. Students are expected to conduct research on a substantive, faculty-guided project, and contribute and participate in related professional development activities. Award winners will not be able to pick their own research project. Two awards per year are estimated. The Research Experience Fellowship is provided in partnership with Posillico. Evan R. Liblit Scholarship

The Even R. Liblit Scholarship is awarded each year by the Stony Brook Waste Management Institute in partnership with SoMAS.

Othmar Ammann Endowed Scholarship in Civil Engineering

The Othmar Ammann Scholarship in Civil Engineering was established in memory of Othmar Ammann, who was a prominent engineer, most well-known for his accomplishments in the field of bridge-design engineering. The scholarship provides support, in the amount of two $2,000 scholarship awards, for undergraduate and graduate civil engineering students in good academic standing.

Suez North America Endowed Scholarship

The Suez North America Scholarship was established in 2018 to recognize a high achieving CEAS student who is pursuing undergraduate studies in a field related to the water industry.  Students must be enrolled full-time, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and plan to pursue a career or advanced degree in the water industry, such as water treatment, water recycling and water quality.  An award of $1000 will be granted each academic year.

Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URECA) Scholarship

URECA provides support to SB students engaged in faculty-mentored research and/or creative activities in all disciplines.

ASCE MET Section Scholarship

The Met Section of ASCE awards annual scholarships to active members.

American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) – New York

To promote the profession to the next generation, award outstanding engineering students and help New York retain promising young talent, ACEC New York administers a statewide scholarship program. Since the program’s inception in 2002, the council has awarded over $500,000 collectively, to 192 high-achieving engineering students attending New York State colleges and universities.

Adopt-an-Undergrad (New York State Association of Transportation Engineers)

This provides a $2,000 - $4,000 scholarship for students who have lived/worked in the Hudson Valley Region. Recipients must also be pursuing a degree in engineering specifically focusing on design, construction or maintenance of public works within the physical and natural environment. GPA must be 2.5 or higher and students can apply immediately following their sophomore year.  The application deadline is in June, so please make sure to be in touch with the CE office in the spring for an application.
