CIV Admissions Frequently Asked Questions
How do I apply to the Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University?
The Department of Civil Engineering accepts applications from first-time freshmen and transfer students. To apply, simply indicate your interest in the civil engineering program when completing your electronic application. All applications are processed through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
How do I gain admission to the Department if I am an Area of Interest (AOI) student at Stony Brook?
For students who entered the University in Fall 2018 or later, applications for admission to the Department of Civil Engineering from AOI and College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) students are reviewed twice a year. The deadlines are January 5 for spring admission and June 5 for fall admission. Students who submit their applications on time will be admitted if they meet the major entrance requirements for their chosen major (see details below).
To qualify:
-
-
- Students must complete the major entrance requirements within one year of enrolling in their first course that applies toward major entry.
- Applications must be submitted by the deadline immediately following the completion of these requirements and no later than the one-year limit.
-
AOI students and other CEAS students who apply after the deadline will be considered through the same process as non-CEAS students and double-major applicants.
If you entered the University during Spring 2018 or earlier, click here.
How do I gain admission to the Department of Civil Engineering if I am working toward a non-CEAS major at Stony Brook?
Applications for admission to the Department of Civil Engineering from non-CEAS students are reviewed twice a year. The application deadlines are January 5 for spring admission and June 5 for fall admission.
To be considered, students must meet the major entrance requirements. However, meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance, as admission is competitive and depends on program capacity.

What are the civil engineering requirements for students already enrolled at Stony Brook University?
To gain admission to the Civil Engineering program, students must meet the following requirements:
-
-
- Complete at least 10 credits in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering courses (excluding EST 392, EST 393, ESE 301, and CME 233) required for the major.
- Maintain a GPA of 3.2 in all mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering courses (excluding EST 392, EST 393, ESE 301, and CME 233) that apply to major requirements, with no more than one grade below B-.
- Ensure that no courses for the major have been repeated.
- Complete course evaluations for all transferred courses that are intended to meet major requirements.
-
How do I transfer credits to Stony Brook University?
Academic and Transfer Advising Services (ATAS) maintains the Transfer Equivalency Database, which lists courses from other institutions deemed equivalent to Stony Brook courses.
Transfer students must submit the appropriate forms to ATAS for their transfer credits to appear on their official record. For courses not listed in the Transfer Equivalency Database, students should complete a Transfer Course Evaluation form. This form requires a signature from the department corresponding to the course taken and must be processed by ATAS.
I am thinking about adding civil engineering as a second major. Do I still need to complete the major entry requirements?
Yes, even if you already have one major, you must still complete the major entry requirements to declare a civil engineering major. Please follow the process outlined above under "How do I gain admission to the Department of Civil Engineering if I am working toward a non-CEAS major at Stony Brook?"
Note: Your Civil Engineering major will be listed as your primary major, and your other major will be listed as your second major. Students cannot double major in two programs that lead to BE degrees.
